GUIDELINES

STONEHOUSE RESIDENCY is a not for profit guest residency instituted to benefit the visual arts faculties of colleges, universities and high schools. However, all serious artists and writers with professional standing in their fields or who demonstrate promise will be considered for invitation.

STONEHOUSE RESIDENCY is located on a mountain ranch in Miramonte CA, just outside Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks:

Six residencies of four weeks each will be provided during the normal summer month vacation times (e.g. three guests during June, and three from mid-July to mid-August). Three residencies of three or four weeks each will also be provided in the October, January/February, and April time frames, if there is demand. Writers are encouraged to apply for winter times, when the studios are untenable. During the remainder of the year, visits may be arranged at the discretion of the patrons. Artists are the houseguests of the patrons of Stonehouse for the duration of their stay. Repeat visits are encouraged.

Guests are invited based on review of prior work, including slides if appropriate, and subsequent conversation with the hosts of Stonehouse. Advice will be solicited from at least three persons knowledgeable in the appropriate arts (Art Advisory Board). Experimentation and collaboration across art disciplines emphasizing the resonance of material, form and content is encouraged.

Studio facilities are provided by Stonehouse. Current facilities allow guests to pursue interests in writing, painting and drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture. Guest artists must provide consumable supplies and materials and specialized equipment. Print presses and kilns are not yet available. The studios are located a short downhill walk from the main house. They are converted chicken coops and thus somewhat rustic. Guests will be consulted with regard to layout and general equipment requirements.

Guests are accommodated in one of three private rooms on the upper floor of a family residence. Linen is provided. Laundry facilities are available, as is entertainment in the form of an extensive movie collection, an eclectic library, and local trails and national parks for hiking. None of the living or studio facilities are designed to accommodate guests with disabilities. Some arrangement may be possible. Because the residency is an intense, focused time for development and facilities are limited, inclusion of a guest’s family or friends in the residency is not allowed (limited visits are possible). Pets are also not allowed.

Reasonable house rules minimizing the negative impact a guest may have on the others in the household must be observed, particularly with regard to sharing common facilities and to noise levels in nominally private areas. Abusive behavior is not tolerated.

Smoking is not permitted in the residence or any studio spaces or any other area of the property that constitutes a fire hazard. A covered, outside smoking area can be arranged for the hopelessly addicted.

Drug and alcohol abuse is not tolerated. Limited social drinking of alcoholic beverages is allowed. Non-medicinal drug use is not allowed. The comfort and well being of other residents is the governing factor.

Insects, spiders, and other flying, crawling, leaping and running creatures are rampant in a mountain ranch environment, and the facilities are not free of such. Guests are forewarned. It is nature at its predatory best, and there is an irresistible natural force for everyone and everything to assume their proper place in the local state of grace. There are also poison oak, burrs, stickers, thistles, and so on, as well as the more pleasant varieties of plant such as oak, juniper, bay, buckeye, and pine.

Transportation to and from the Stonehouse is the guest’s responsibility. Pickup at the Fresno or Visalia airports can be arranged. Shopping and/or touring trips to nearby cities (Fresno, Visalia, Clovis, etc.) happen at least weekly (30–60 minutes away by car.) Trips into nearby National Parks (e.g. Sequoia National Forest and Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Mineral King National Game Refuge, General Grant grove, possibly Yosemite Valley) may happen once or twice during each residency. Sequoia and Kings Canyon are close by. Mineral King and Yosemite are somewhat further but are still relatively accessible.

Guest artists are asked to contribute at a suggested level of $300 to a common fund, which will be used for food and to replace consumable supplies and materials. The resident owners/patrons of the guest residency contribute to the common fund at the same rate.

Guest artists are requested to contribute adequate images of completed work to Stonehouse Residency archives and may leave a representative work of art resulting from the visit at Stonehouse, if it is appropriate to do so. The guest artist must take away all artwork, materials and supplies at the end of the visit. Stonehouse patrons will aid in transportation to the extent possible.

Participation of guests in the normal chores is requested (Average 4 hr/week). This includes, for example, gardening (eight raised beds), weed control, maintenance and assistance with cooking.

EXHIBITION OF WORK

In the interest of developing ties between participants and current art developments on the larger art scene, it is the goal of Stonehouse Residency to maintain an internet presence for each participating resident artist.
